Melasma [1] is when larger areas of hyperpigmentation appear. This can mostly occur on any part of the face, and could also occur on the neck, arms, and chest.

With melasma, the hyperpigmented areas have an irregular border. They can be symmetrical, affecting bother sides of the body. The exact cause of this condition is still unknown. But some factors believed to contribute to it include:

  • Genetic factors
  • Too much exposure to sunlight
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain types of medication or cosmetics
