Periorbital hyperpigmentation

Periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH) [6] is when hyperpigmentation occurs around the eyes. People with POH have a dark spots around their eyes which can make them look tired.

Potential causes of POH include genetic factors, swelling around the eyes, or anatomical changes around the eyes. PIH can sometimes lead to POH, especially when there is eczema or contact dermatitis flare-up.

Acanthosis nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans [7] is a type of hyperpigmentation that occurred in areas like the neck, armpit, and groin. You will also experience itching, thickening, skin tags, and an unpleasant odor in the affected area.

Potential risk factors of acanthosis nigricans include:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes [8]
  • Conditions that affect hormone levels, such as thyroid disease or polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Certain medications like birth control pills
  • Cancer in the stomach
