Risk factors of shingles

Certain things increase your chances of getting shingles. For example, people who have had chickenpox can get shingles. Some other risk factors include:

Having a weak immune system

You are at an increased risk of getting shingles if you have a weak immune system. This is because your body is unable to fight bacteria and other slight infections. Some causes of a weak immune system include:

  • Having HIV [5]
  • Taking immunosuppressive medications
  • Having cancer [6]
  • Having received an organ or bone transplant
  • Age

Most people that develop shingles are above the age of 50. This is because your immune system naturally weakens as you get older. Although, younger people can also get shingles.
