Koebner Phenomenon: An Overview

What skin injuries cause the Koebner phenomenon?

Studies show that injuries that affect the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and the middle layer (dermis) may lead to the Koebner phenomenon. Examples of these injuries include:

  • Radiation therapy (less common).
  • Insect and animal bites.
  • Injections, piercings and punctures.
  • Scratching or self-injury (such as skin picking).
  • Tattoos, including tattoo removal.
  • Burns, like sunburns [2] (less common).
  • Injuries, wounds, and Surgical procedures
