Rosacea: Causes & Risk Factors

Causes of Rosacea

The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown. However, studies suggest rosacea could be a symptom of:

  • A condition that affects your blood vessels, immune or nervous system.
  • An infection: The H. pylori bacteria [3] can cause an infection. According to studies, people who have this infection can develop rosacea.
  • Microscopic skin mites (Demodex): Your body has a natural, microscopic mite that lives on your nose and cheeks. Having too many of these mites causes symptoms of rosacea.
  • A protein malfunctioning: The cathelicidin protein [4] protects your skin from infection. If the protein isn’t working as it should, it could lead to symptoms of rosacea.

Diagnosis for Rosacea

Your doctor will thoroughly examine your signs and symptoms and obtain a medical history in order to determine whether you have rosacea. You should discuss any skin issues you are having with your doctor during your examination, such as redness, lumps or pimples, burning, itching, etc. There is no particular test to identify rosacea. Your doctor might advise you to see a dermatologist, who focuses on diseases of the skin.
