4 Common Symptoms of Heartburn

Difficulty swallowing

People with heartburn may or may not experience difficulty when swallowing [4]. This is because not everyone experiences acid reflux that is strong enough to send stomach acid far up the esophagus. Many people do, however. In these people, the acid often affects the lining of the throat. The acid’s corrosive effects on the throat make it hard to swallow without difficulty and pain.

In people whose heartburn stems from severe acid reflux or GERD, the lining of the throat may sustain significant damage that will greatly impair their ability to swallow food and drinks. Fortunately, some medications can help in treating and managing this problem.
