Even though medications can’t cure the stomach flu, even antibiotics won’t be helpful when it is a virus infection. However, some prescribed over-the-counter medications can help treat the symptoms. Symptoms like fever or body aches can be treated with ibuprofen (Advil), but it is essential to take it with enough water in order to try to avoid harming your kidneys as possible. Other medications can help reduce the symptoms, such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol) [4] for fever, and some antiemetics such as prochlorperazine, promethazine, or ondansetron to help treat nausea and vomiting. [5]
Also, OTC antidiarrheals such as subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) and loperamide hydrochloride would help treat the ailment. It is important to note that Pepto-Bismol should not be used for children.
