Can Anyone Get Heatstroke?

Yes, anyone can develop heatstroke. However, the condition is more common in the elderly and children because of the lack of ability to control body temperature adequately. Soldiers, athletes, and people who engage in physical labour regularly are prone to the condition.

The following factors increase the risk of developing heatstroke:

  • Wearing tight or heavy clothing, like protective gear.
  • Drinking alcohol.
  • Being male.
  • A History of heatstroke.
  • Being dehydrated.
  • Using drugs that affect your body’s ability to control temperatures, such as tranquillizers, diuretics, sedatives, or blood and heart pressure drugs.
  • Having certain conditions that reduce your ability to sweat, like cystic fibrosis.
  • Poor physical conditioning or not being used to hot conditions.
  • Having certain health conditions, like a sleep disorder or problems with your kidneys, liver, thyroid, lungs, heart, or blood vessels.
  • Having a high fever.
  • Having obesity.

Some medications and drugs can also make you more susceptible to heat stroke. Examples include alcohol, Tricyclic antidepressants, Beta-blockers, Laxatives, Benzodiazepines, Cocaine and Diuretics.
