13 Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

Eyes Problems

An overactive thyroid causes eye problems known as thyroid eye disease. The symptoms that occur in thyroid eye disease include dry eyes, swollen eyes, gritty eyes, watery eyes, red eyes, bulging eyes, double vision, difficulty closing the eyes, and problems with vision. Research suggests that the cause of overactive thyroid eye problems is an autoimmune disorder.

Menstrual Problems

Hyperthyroidism can cause irregular menstruation or short and light menstruation. Absent or infrequent menses are the most common abnormalities seen with severe hyperthyroidism. This is because an increase in thyroid hormone indirectly causes an increase in sex hormone-binding globulin, which can prevent ovulation. An overactive thyroid gland that leads to scant or missed periods decreases fertility. Also, excessive production of thyroid hormone during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage.
