Enlarged Thyroid Gland

A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. It typically happens due to a deficiency of the intake of iodine in the body. If you have enough iodine in your diet, then it is more likely that your goiter is caused by a thyroid disorder.
When your thyroid glands produce insufficient thyroid hormones, your body tries to increase the production. The pituitary gland produces a lot of TSH to stimulate hormone production in the thyroid gland. This can cause the thyroid gland to enlarge. [8]
Goiters are normally painless, but large goiters can cause coughs and people will find it difficulty breathing or swallowing food.
Pain in the Joints and Muscles
Hypothyroidism can cause pain in many parts of the body. Many times, this pain does not even affect the throat where the condition develops. For some people, hypothyroidism results in severe arthritis-like pain in the joints. [9]
According to doctors from Mayo Clinic, the condition may lead to tenderness, ache, and stiffness in the muscles. [10] These symptoms usually concentrate on the muscles of the hips and shoulders. It is also common to experience swelling in the small joints of the hands and feet. It can also cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
