Postpartum depression, also known as baby blues is an experience common with most new moms after childbirth. After a woman gives birth, there is a sudden and dramatic reduction in hormones [progesterone and estrogen] [1] in her body which may cause postpartum depression. The thyroid gland also produces hormones that may also drop dramatically, making her tired, sluggish and depressed.
Childbirth comes with a load of powerful emotions, ranging from joy, wonder, awe, and excitement to anxiety and fear. These emotions can become very overwhelming and weakening. Baby blues usually start within the first few days after delivery and may go on for up to two weeks.
