Menstrual Cup: How it Works, Benefits & More

Benefits of menstrual cups

Menstrual cups have become more commonly used. These are some of the benefits and reasons women choose to use menstrual cups:

  • They’re budget-friendly: The fact that you only have to get one and continue reusing it, unlike tampons or pads, which you have to continually buy.
  • They are safer: menstrual cups unlike pads or tampons collect blood and do not absorb them which makes you free from the risk of getting toxic shock syndrome (TSS) [3], a rare bacterial infection associated with tampons use.
  • You can have sex with them on: but note that only the disposable ones can be left on during sex. Most reusable cups need to be taken out before you have sex.
  • They are eco-friendly: Reusable menstrual cups can last a long time, which means you are not contributing more waste to the environment.
  • You can wear a cup with an IUD [4]: Although it is commonly believed that a menstrual cup can dislodge an IUD, a 2012 study debunked that belief. If you still are concerned, you should check with your doctor about using a menstrual cup.
