There are different types of menstrual-related mood disorders, the most common are PMS and PMDD. A period can also cause an existing mental health disorder to worsen temporarily. The different types of menstrual-related mood disorders include:

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) causes both physical and emotional symptoms. These symptoms begin at any stage between the end of ovulation and the beginning of the menstrual period. Research has shown that 75% of menstruating women experience some form of PMS. PMS symptoms vary from mild to severe, it varies in different women. Some symptoms of PMS include:

  • Anxiety
  • Bloating
  • Aches and pain
  • Acne
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Lack of concentration
  • Headaches
  • Irritability and anger
