Enlarged Heart & Other Defects

An EKG test can be used to evaluate the size of your heart. A normal heart is the same size as your fist. It is located close to the center of your chest. Certain medical conditions increase the size of your heart and cause cardiomegaly.
Cardiomegaly can be caused by viral infections of the cardiac muscle [5], heart failure, advanced age, and high blood pressure. In most cases, cardiomegaly present in an EKG is displayed as abnormal waveforms, which may be a sign of an underlying condition.
In addition, an EKG test can also display a bulge in the walls of your heart, called aneurysm [6]. In most cases, aneurysm occurs in the major vessel that takes blood away from the heart (aorta). Large aneurysms can burst or tear the walls of your artery.
