Barrier Methods of Birth Control: What You Need to Know

Diaphragm and Cervical Caps

Diaphragm and Cervical caps are other barrier tools used for birth control. They are only used by females and are inserted into the vagina to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. They have to be worn for up to six hours before sexual intercourse.

Unlike condoms, they are reusable for up to a year and you need to use them according to the doctor’s prescription. They need to be used with spermicides and have a success rate of about 71 to 88%.

A sponge is also another barrier tool used for birth control. It is also inserted into the vagina to prevent the movement of sperm. It contains spermicide.
