Breast Lift with Implants – What You Need to Know

What’s the Procedure for a Breast Lift with Implants?

The procedure for breast lift with an implant can vary, depending on the shape and size of your breast, how much lift you might need, and the implant to use.

Before your surgery, your doctor will take your full medical history and discuss patient education. He will let you know the risk of the surgery, what you should and should not do before and after the procedure, and when to call your doctor.

There are several techniques for breast lift [2], the most suitable for you will depend on the results of your physical exam and goals of surgery. Generally, the procedure involves the following:

  • Your surgeon will assess and mark you while you are standing, to see the lifted position of the nipple on the breast.
  • Your doctor will administer general anesthesia
  • Your surgeon will make an incision around the areola, extending to the front of the breast.
  • Your surgeon will then proceed to lift your breast and place the implant in it.
  • If necessary, your areola will be moved to the correct position on your breast.
  • Incisions will be closed with stitches or surgical tape

Sometimes a surgeon might not do the lift and implant at the same time. The combined surgery poses some possible risks to the nipple and areola, as well as wound healing. Experts are looking to develop improved techniques for the combined surgery to minimize risk.

If you do need the two surgeries, the lift is usually done first, then the implants are done later.
