Counsellor VS Therapist: How They Differ?

Counselor and Therapist Specialties and the Qualifications of Each Type of Specialist

The specializations of counselors and France are mostly similar. Some of them include:

  • Child and adolescent therapies
  • Therapies for families, couples, groups, or families.
  • Therapy for loss or grief
  • Behavioral therapies
  • Support for anxiety [5] or depression
  • Substance use treatment [6]

It is important to note that counselors and therapists are trained in a certain area of specialty. The certifications and licenses they hold depend on the requirements of their state.

A psychotherapist cannot practice in a state where he is not licensed. You must write various exams organized by your state to be qualified for a specialty. The same thing applies for counselors. They must be licensed in whichever state they choose to practice. Before seeking the service of a counselor or therapist, it is important to ask which license they hold.

You must consider the educational level of your mental health therapist to know if you can get the services you need.  In most cases, a reliable professional will have a doctorate level or master’s education and a license.
