Sun Bleaching Hair: Do’s and Don’ts

How to Sun Bleach Your Hair

Staying in the sun consistently for a long period can help bleach your hair. This process is however slow and it can be detrimental to your skin. Constant exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun can lead to skin cancer [3]. To help hasten the process, the use of some hair products like lemon juice [4] are required.

The process of sun bleaching your hair can be explained as follows:

  • Use of Lemon Juice: Mix water with lemon juice in a ratio of 2:1. Wash your hair with shampoo and dry it with a towel. After washing your hair, spray the juice mixture all over your hair or to areas you want to bleach. After spraying, go outside and sit in the sun for about 30 minutes or an hour. Lemon juice contains citric acid [5] which helps to break down melanin. This effect of lemon juice together with ultraviolet rays from the sun helps to bleach your hair. After sitting in the sun, go back inside and wash lemon juice off your hair. This process is faster and you can repeat as much as you can.
  • Use of Salt Water Spray: Prepare salt water by placing two tablespoons of salt into a cup of water. Spray the salt water all over your hair or in areas you want to bleach. After spraying, go outside and sit in the sun for about 15 minutes. After sitting in the sun, go back inside and wash your hair.
  • Use of Chamomile Tea: Chamomile tea is useful for people with very dark hair. In hot water, place two chamomile tea bags or more if you have very long hair. Spray the tea all over your hair or in areas you plan to bleach. After spraying, go outside and sit in the sun for about 30 minutes. Go back inside and wash your hair. This process is not so fast especially if you have very dark hair but it is effective if it is done consistently.
