Causes of Celiac Disease

The genes of a patient, consuming foods that contain gluten and other factors can be responsible for celiac disease. However, the precise cause is not known. In some cases, infant-feeding practices, gut bacteria and gastrointestinal infections might be responsible.
Celiac disease can be activated after surgery, childbirth, viral infection or severe emotional stress. There are tiny hair like projections (villi) in the small intestine. These projections can be destroyed if the immune systems overreact to gluten in food. Villi are used to absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients present in meals consumed. Damage to the villi, impedes the absorption of nutrients in the body.
