Does Niacinamide Cause Purging? Facts to Know

Why does niacinamide cause breakouts?

Niacinamide is not responsible for kin purging. However, some people still have breakouts when they use them. This could be caused by so many factors.

So many clinical studies have been done and most of them conclude that niacinamide used to treat several skin conditions efficiently used 4-5 percent niacinamide while another popular niacinamide serum contains about 10 percent. This concentration is mostly strong for people.

Some niacinamide products also contain a variety of other ingredients. If any of these ingredients can elevate skin cell turnover then they can cause skin purging. Some ingredients are comedogenic in nature, which means that they can cause clogging of pores and cause breakouts.

  • Products and treatments that have the ability to increase cell turnover and purging are:
  • AHAs (e.g. glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, mandelic acid)
  • Lasers and chemical peels
  • Physical exfoliation such as scrubs, microdermabrasion)
  • BHAs which include salicylic acid
  • Retinoids [6] such as tretinoin, retinol, retinaldehyde
  • Acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide

Purging vs. breaking out

I mentioned earlier that breakouts caused by purging can only occur in parts of the face where you would usually have breakouts. They also clear up quicker than normal, when you continue to use the skincare product.

When comparing both, breakouts caused by a reaction occurring on the face where you should not be having breakouts, take longer to clear up, and don’t clear up even if you continue to use the product.
