Iron Deficiency (Low Iron) Signs & Symptoms

Headache and lightheadedness

The headache and lightheadedness experienced in some iron-deficient people may be the result of a lack of adequate oxygen supply to the brain. This reduction in oxygen supply is caused by low hemoglobin production.

The lack of sufficient oxygen to the brain may cause swelling in the blood vessels. This may increase the pressure in the brain and result in headaches but the process is not clear yet. Low levels of oxygen supply to the brain are known to result in lightheadedness [2] and even fainting sometimes.

Headache as a result of iron deficiency often co-occurs with lightheadedness and is more prevalent in women [3].
