Iron Deficiency (Low Iron) Signs & Symptoms

Palpitations

Heart palpitations are another symptom of iron deficiency in humans. Palpitations are characterized by rapid, often noticeable heartbeats that seem to pound against the ribcage.

Iron deficiency leads to a drop in the production of the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin protein present in the bloodstream. The resulting shortage of oxygen causes the heart to exert more effort in pumping oxygen-rich blood around the body. The pressure this process puts on the heart is believed to be responsible for the palpitations [5] experienced by some people with iron deficiency.

Heart palpitations are not a common symptom of iron deficiency in most people. In the rare situations where this happens, the exertion put on the heart may result in heart murmurs, enlargement, or even failure when prolonged.
