Symptoms And Treatments for High Iron (Hemochromatosis)

Joint or Abdominal Pain

Pain in the joints is a common symptom of hemochromatosis. This condition is also known as hemochromatosis arthritis [4]. Pain in the joints of the hands is a common symptom of high iron. You may also experience pain in other joints, but you are most likely to feel it in your hands first. Hereditary hemochromatosis is often associated with pain in the joints, muscles, and other body parts where excess iron tends to accumulate.

When excess iron stores over time in the internal organs, it may cause iron poisoning. This is when it begins to damage the liver and other organs. This metal poisoning may cause nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and bloody stools. Abdominal pain due to iron poisoning is an emergency and must be treated as such. During this emergency, chelation is the usual procedure, where a tube is passed into the stomach to administer the chelating agents to extract some of the metal.
