Possible side effects and complications of tattoos

After getting your tattoo, your skin may appear red, sore [4], and itchy [5]. Some people notice excess ink and blood fluid escaping from the skin; this is normal.
You should see a doctor if you start noticing the following things:
Infection
A tattoo that is not cared for appropriately, makes the skin susceptible to infections. Infected skins appear red, warm, and cause discomfort. Sometimes, the skin releases pus [6].
The infection could be a result of a contaminated needle or ink. Using a piece of contaminated equipment can cause blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, tetanus, or HIV. Other infections such as nontuberculous mycobacterial skin infections can be transferred via tattoos.
Allergic reaction
People experience allergic reactions to inks used. The skin becomes red, swollen, and itchy on the tattoo. The most popular cause of allergic reaction is red dyes.
Red dyes, black dyes can cause nonallergic skin reactions like photosensitivity.
Scarring
People experience scarring if they pick on the tattoos when it is still new and if the needle injures them.
