The Side Effects of Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in the body. It’s used as a medicine, and it’s conventionally made synthetically in a laboratory. Melatonin is conventionally available in pill form, but it’s also available in other forms that can be positioned under the tongue or under the cheek.

In most cases, melatonin supplements are used as a sleep aid. They help individuals fall asleep, improve sleep quality, and increase sleep duration. Melatonin plays a vital role in the body’s antioxidant defenses and helps regulate blood pressure, cortisol levels, body temperature, and sexual and immune function.

Several research types have investigated the safety of melatonin, but there hasn’t been any that links to a severe side effect. The study also shows that it may not cause dependence or withdrawal symptoms [1].

Headache

Melatonin may cause symptoms of headaches [2] in individuals who take the supplements. For this reason, it’s essential to see a medical practitioner when this sign is observed. A headache is a common condition that causes a significant level of pain and discomfort in the scalp or head, and it can be mild or severe, depending on the condition that causes it.

There are different types of headaches with various symptoms. Most of these headaches cause neck stiffness, dulling and aching pain, scalp tenderness, shoulder stiffness, and tightness or pressure in the forehead.

Headaches are typically diagnosed when they are severe to be due to an underlying condition. Hence, doctors usually perform examinations to determine the exact cause. It’s advisable to consult a doctor when you observe mid or severe headaches.
