Insulin Resistance: Symptoms, Causes, Tests, Treatment

Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

People with prediabetes must visit a doctor frequently to check blood sugar or hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) ,so they can know if you have diabetes.

Major symptoms of diabetes are:

  • Excessive thirst or hunger
  • Regular infections
  • Evidence of high blood sugar levels in blood work
  • Regular or elevated urination
  • Tingling feelings in hands or feet
  • Feeling hungry after eating
  • Feeling more weak than normal

In some cases, people who are diagnosed with insulin resistance may have a skin condition called acanthosis nigricans. It looks dark with velvety patches mostly on the backs of the neck, groin and armpits. Growth factors that are similar to factor 1 receptors are on skin cells that can be activated intentionally or not by insulin. This could cause growth and development of the condition acanthosis nigricans. This condition cannot be treated. But if it is caused by another disease, the normal skin color can be restored.

Doctors may run some tests in the lab to know if you have diabetes [3] or prediabetes. Most doctors don’t test for insulin resistance, but the most common test is an euglycemic insulin clamp used for research purposes.

Some symptoms of insulin resistance are:

  • A waistline of over 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women
  • Blood pressure readings of 130/80 or higher
  • A fasting glucose level over 100mg/dL
  • A fasting triglyceride level over 150 mg/dL
  • An HDL cholesterol level under 40 mg/dL in men and 50 mg/dL in women
  • Skin tags
  • Patches of dark, velvety skin called acanthosis nigricans
