SGLT2 Inhibitors: What It Is, Side Effects, and More

Side effects and risks of using SGLT2 inhibitors

Research shows that SGLT2 inhibitors are safe. However, like every other medication, they can result in various side effects. You are more susceptible to having any of these conditions if you use this type of drug:

  • Hypotension, or low blood pressure
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition makes your blood acidic
  • Yeast infections

You may experience some severe side effects when using SGLT2 inhibitors:

  • Genital infection: Studies show that people who use SGLT2 inhibitors are prone to genital infection. This type of infection is clinically referred to as Fournier’s gangrene or necrotizing fasciitis.
  • Bone fracture: According to research, Invokana, a type of SGLT2 inhibitor increases the risk of breaking a bone. Fortunately, this severe side effect does not occur in people who use the other types of inhibitors.
  • Decreased kidney efficiency or kidney injury.
  • Invokana may increase the risk of lower limb amputation [1].

You can visit your doctor to know more about the possible risks of using SGLT2 inhibitors. It is important to learn how to identify and manage any potential side effects. Visit your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any signs of a side effect.
