Topiramate Uses, Side Effects & Warnings

Can Pregnant And Lactating Mothers Take Topiramate?

It is advisable that you do not use Topiramate when you are pregnant or if you are planning to become pregnant. This drug can affect your developing child. Children who are born by mothers who used this drug during pregnancy usually have low weight.

Lactating mothers too should avoid this drug. The drug can pass through the breast milk to your child. This can lead to the development of diarrhea in your child. Your child may develop other symptoms too. If you are a breastfeeding mother, make sure you tell your doctor so that an alternative drug is provided.

If you do not plan to get pregnant, stay away from this drug. Family planning through the use of contraceptives are usually less effective when you are on this medication. Topiramate can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptives and you might eventually get pregnant if you are not careful.
