How to take a FIT test
The FIT test is a straightforward and noninvasive test that can be done at home. A FIT test home testing kit contains instructions and a sterile container for the stool sample. Most kits will also contain envelopes for sending the sample to a laboratory. You don’t have to watch your diet or specially prepare yourself before collecting your sample.
Routine screenings
Some people may want to do a FIT test as a routine screening because of their age. The Preventive Services Task Force suggests that adults between ages 45–75 years undergo screening for colorectal cancer. Other individuals may wish to undergo a FIT test because they are having symptoms that could indicate colorectal cancer. These signs are:
- unexplained abdominal pain
- changes in bowel habits
- unexplained weight loss
The concept behind a FIT test is the same everywhere. Although individual instructions and processing times may be different. Here are some home testing kits that can be used.
