When to contact a doctor

Anyone who gets a positive FIT test result should visit a doctor for further evaluation. Although a positive test does not necessarily mean that a person has colorectal cancer, your doctor can discuss the next steps.
You must visit your doctor if you observe symptoms that show colorectal cancer. People who think they have an elevated risk of this disease may also have to discuss regular screening with a doctor.
FIT tests can identify early signs of colon cancer, but there are other reasons a person may get a positive result, such as colon polyps, pre-cancerous polyps, inflammation, and hemorrhoids. You must contact your doctor for advice if you want to rule out any medical condition.
