How Common Are Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms?

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is quite common and can happen to anyone.

  • They occur in 1% and 2% of people assigned male at birth age 65 and older. The risk increases as another decade is added to your age.
  • They occur in about 1.4 percent of adults between the ages of 50 and 85 in the U.S. This is about 1.1 million people.
  • They occur in 1% of people assigned female at birth 70 and older with a history of smoking.
  • They are four times more likely to occur in people assigned male at birth than in people assigned female at birth.

According to research:

  • AAAs are not as common among black and Asian people as compared to white people
  • Aneurysm can form anywhere along your aorta, but they mostly form in the belly. Abdominal aortic aneurysms represent about 75% of all aortic aneurysm.
  • Although AAA is more common among people assigned male at birth, when they form in people assigned female at birth they are more likely to rupture at smaller sizes as well as occur in family members.
