11 Causes of Lower Back Pain

Abnormal Spine Curvature

The most common cause of back pain is poor posture due to prolonged sitting as well as an abnormal curvature of the spine (scoliosis [11] and kyphosis [12]). These are congenital disorders that are typically first diagnosed during infancy or adolescence. This abnormal curvature in the spine causes pain and bad posture as it puts a strain on the tendons, muscles, ligaments, and vertebrae. Scoliosis is a disease of the musculoskeletal system, in which the spine is deformed (bent). The deformity can be congenital or developed over time. In some cases, scoliosis occurs after a serious spinal injury, such as after an accident.

It is also common that there is back pain in pregnancy, especially in the last months of pregnancy due to overload of the spine. This overload may lead to the individual assuming a more comfortable position to ease the stress on the back and this can sometimes lead to bad posture.
