8 Causes of Chest Pain

Digestive Problems and Bacterial or Viral Infections

Digestive illnesses [4] like Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or Acid reflux can cause heartburn. Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest area that can last between a few minutes to over several hours. The severity of heartburn may worsen when you take certain positions. Maintaining an upright position like standing or sitting usually relieves heartburn.

It is best to wait for a few hours after eating before bending over or lying down, as it may cause heartburn. Some foods can trigger a burning feeling in the chest, including fats, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, citrus, and spicy foods.

Symptoms of bacterial or viral infections often include chest pain. Pneumonia bacteria is the infection [5] of the lungs caused by the Streptococcus bacteria. The main symptom of this condition is difficulty breathing and chest pain. The patient may experience sharp or stabbing chest pain that gets worse when you take deep breaths, cough, or sneeze. The chest wall can also get infected, and the symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and discomfort in the chest area. Myocarditis is a viral infection that causes the cardiac muscle (myocardium) to swell. Chest pain is a common symptom of this condition.
