8 Causes of Chest Pain

Psychological Factors

Psychological factors like anxiety and depression can cause chest pain. Chest pain caused by anxiety has been described as a sharp shooting sensation. This condition is otherwise called a panic attack [3]. It is a sudden episode caused by an intense fear of imminent danger. Elevated heart rate and shortness of breath are some of the common symptoms of anxiety. Panic attacks may last only for a few minutes or up to an hour.

Studies have shown that up to twenty-five percent of the patients suffering from mental disorders like anxiety or depression suffer chest pain. Recent studies show a link between mental disorders and recurrent pains, and sudden pressure in the chest.
