8 Causes of Chest Pain

Strenuous Activities and Bone or Muscle Problems

High-intensity activities that involve the extreme use of the torso muscles can cause angina. Examples of physical activities that can trigger this symptom include weight-lifting and carrying heavy objects. You may feel an ache in the chest area during or after working out, and this is likely due to spasm of the lungs.

Exercising or workouts elevates the heart rate and can cause spasms, which is when muscles contract and narrows the airways. Lung spasms can cause discomfort when you take deep breaths, cough, or sneeze.

Internal injuries like Costochondritis, which is the inflammation of the cartilage connecting the rib and breastbone can also cause severe and recurring pains. Deep breaths, coughing, and sneezing may worsen the severity of the symptoms, causing shortness of breath. Taking shallow breaths can significantly relieve the pain. Pulled or strained chest muscles may cause sharp pain. This is when the cardiac muscles are stretched or pulled, and recovery usually takes up to several weeks or a few months.
