8 Tips for Relieving Pain from Herniated Discs

Selective Nerve Root Blocks

A minimally invasive injection called a selective nerve root block (SNRB) [5] blocks the transmission of pain signals from your spinal nerves to your brain. Local anesthetics and occasionally corticosteroids are included in nerve root block injections to treat pain and reduce inflammation. If the nerve root block reduces the patient’s pain, it serves as diagnostic evidence that the nerve root is what is causing the pain. The patient may have some therapeutic relief from the nerve root block.

In order to execute an SNRB, medical professionals inject a steroid-anesthetic solution into or next to the nerve root’s neural sheath. A nerve root is the location where a nerve leaves the spine, while a neural sheath is the connective tissue that surrounds each nerve. Fluoroscopy, or X-ray guidance and a contrast dye is used by doctors to ensure they inject the SNRM is the required area.
