Adenovirus Infections: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Symptoms of an Adenovirus Infection

Depending on the area of your body the virus infects, you may have different signs and symptoms of an adenovirus infection. Your respiratory system is typically infected by the virus. Adenovirus infections in the respiratory tract can produce symptoms that are comparable to the flu or the common cold. The type of adenovirus infection you are experiencing will determine your symptoms. Likely symptoms include:

  • Cough, runny nose, fever, chills, and bronchitis
  • Colds and other respiratory infections: Swollen glands, runny and stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, and
  • Barking cough, having problems breathing, and making a high-pitched noise when you breathe in
  • Ear infection: fever, irritability, and ear pain
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis): Red eyes, discharge from the eyes, crying, and the sensation that something is in your eye.
  • Pneumonia: fever, cough, and breathing difficulties
  • Intestine and stomach infections vomiting, nausea, headache, fever, and stomach cramps
  • Headache, fever, stiff neck, nausea [2], and vomiting (rare) are symptoms of meningitis [3] and encephalitis [4], which can cause swelling of the brain and spinal cord.
  • Urinary tract infections: frequent urination, burning and pain, and blood in the urine

Adenoviruses can more rarely affect your bladder or nerve system. UTIs can be brought on by viruses in your bladder. Brain-damaging illnesses can be brought on by viruses in your neurological system. Examples of such conditions are encephalitis and meningitis.

If your kid exhibits any of these more severe signs, call the doctor straight away:

  • difficulty breathing
  • swelling around the eyes
  • a fever that persists for several days
  • dehydration symptoms, such as fewer tears or fewer wet diapers

The majority of adenovirus symptoms persist a few days to as long as two weeks. More time may pass between severe infections. It’s possible that you have symptoms, like a cough, that last for a while.
