Axillary Lymph Node Dissection

The recovery process for an axillary lymph node dissection

ALND is a major surgery. That you have been discharged from the hospital does not mean you have fully recovered. You would require proper home care for some days before you resume your normal activities. A common after effect of the surgery is swelling which may last for up to a week, while you expect full recovery after 4 or 6 weeks.

You will also feel minor pain, for that your doctor will prescribe pain medication for you before you leave the hospital. You will also be given instructions on how to take care of your stitches and drains, and when to go back to your doctor for removal.

You would need to wait at least 24 hours before you take a shower. But avoid bathing or swimming until your doctor gives you the go ahead at your next checkup.

Also, do not use lotions, powders, or deodorant around the affected area. Your doctor will tell you when it is safe to do so.

Daily hand and arm exercise is also recommended to help prevent complications, ease the recovery, and improve swelling and mobility. You might need the help of a physical therapist for this.
