Clavicle Fractures – Treatment and Management

What Are the Signs of Clavicle Fracture?

A Clavicle fracture is usually accompanied by a lot of pain. You may experience difficulties moving your arm without feeling intense pain. Other signs of this fracture include:

  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Inability to move your shoulder
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • A bump or raised area over the break
  • Grinding or crackling noise when you move your arm
  • Forward sagging of your shoulder

What Are The Causes of Broken Collarbone?

The most common cause of broken collarbones is a direct blow to the shoulder that snaps or breaks the bone. This can either occur when you fall downward on your shoulder or when you fall on an outstretched arm. It can also happen in car accidents.

Sports injuries [1] are a major cause of broken collarbones, especially in young adults. The clavicle does not completely ossify until you are 20. Studies show that people who participate in contact sports such as hockey and football are more likely to experience shoulder injuries. Other sports, such as skateboarding or skiing where a fall is likely to occur at high speeds or in a downward direction can also cause clavicle fracture.
