Edema: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Types of Edema

There are various types of edema, based on the affected area and the further complications they can cause, they include:

  • Cerebral edema: this is a life-threatening type of edema, it results from the presence of fluid in the brain, thereby increasing the pressure in the skull. It is also referred to as brain swelling. Signs of this condition include nausea, dizziness, headache, changes in mental state, and neck pain.
  • Periorbital edema: this is the swelling around the eye socket or orbit. It is usually temporary and can be caused by infections, and drug reactions.
  • Peripheral edema: this type mostly affects the legs, feet, hands, and arms. It leads to swelling of the limbs and makes the mobility of these areas difficult. This also occurs due to underlying problems in the circulatory systems, lymph nodes, heart muscles, and liver.
  • Macular edema: this type of edema can be life-threatening, it results from leakage of the blood vessels around a part of the retina called the macula. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss. It is more chronic in people with diabetes.
  • Lymphedema: this is a long-term condition that causes swelling in the lymphatic system. It is incurable but can be managed with the right treatments and supervision.
