Femur Fracture: What Is It, Symptoms and Treatment

What Is External Fixation Surgery to Treat Broken Femur?

External fixation is a surgery that stabilizes your broken femur by placing metal bolts in your femur. The bolts are secured to a frame on the outside of your femur. This surgery is likely in a case where you need ORIF but can’t have it right away.

What is the process for external fixation?

  • Your surgeon will administer anesthesia for this surgery
  • Surgeons use drills to make Hal in the undamaged areas around your broken femur. The holes hold bolts.
  • The bolts are connected to rods placed outside your body. These rods have ball-and-socket joints so the bolts can be adjusted to make sure the broken sections of your femur are aligned.
  • The rods are connected to the frame placed outside your femur.

Is physical therapy necessary after surgery?

Your healthcare provider will administer physical therapy [5] for you throughout your recovery.

They will also discuss the pains you are experiencing with you and decide if you will need pain medication and the appropriate one for you.
