Ganglion Cysts Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Medical treatment

If you are experiencing serious pain, you may need one of these treatment methods to reduce the pain:

  • Aspiration: Aspiration is a procedure that involves placing a needle in the cyst to remove the liquid. Your doctor will insert a steroid compound [6] (anti-inflammatory) into the area. Then the area is placed in a splint to prevent any movement. The cyst may return because aspiration does not remove the area that attaches the cyst to the joint.
  • Surgery: Surgery involves removing the ganglion cyst and the area around it that joins the joint. If you don’t see improvements after aspiration and the cyst is still painful, you may have to undergo surgery. Your doctor may also recommend surgery if the pain disrupts you from performing daily functions (especially when the cyst is on your dominant hand), or if you experience tingling or numbness of the hand or fingers.
