Osteomalacia vs. Osteoporosis: How They Differ?

What Is Osteomalacia?

Osteomalacia is a bone disease that causes softening of the bone tissues. It disrupts the process of bone formation and bone development. As a result, its most common symptom is weakening of the bones. It is majorly caused by the absence of sufficient vitamin D [1] in the body. Lack of adequate vitamin D in the body reduces the ability of your bones to absorb calcium, resulting in weakening of the bones.

In most cases, absence of sufficient vitamin D occurs due to:

  • Intestinal conditions
  • Diet problems [2]
  • Lack of sun exposure

In some cases, Vitamin D deficiency may occur due to problems with the body’s absorbing ability. Problems with nutrient absorption can be caused by several health conditions. Some of them include:

  • Drugs for certain conditions, such as seizures
  • Various types of cancer
  • Kidney and liver disorders [3]
  • Celiac disease [4]
