Treatment for Shin Splints

Shin splints will heal overtime, it is important that you rest your bones and muscles in the area for speedy recovery. Some treatment options will include:
- Rest: it will help if you take a break from sports, running and other activities to give your bones and muscles a chance to recover. You may need to rest and avoid using the leg for a few weeks or longer.
- Ice: Applying cold compress to your shin every 10 to 20 minutes, three to four times a day, for a few days can help relieve inflammation and plain of shin splints.
- Supplements: a vitamin D3 supplement (1000 to 2000 IU daily) may be helpful. Talk with your doctor about the best supplements to use.
- Pain relievers: over-the-counter (OTC) non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs [3]) can ease pain and swelling.
- Gradual increase in activity level: when you start with your usual activities, it is best that you start slowly. Increase your activities gradually to reduce the risk of shin splints returning.
- Shin splint stretches: It may be helpful to gently stretch and flex you lower leg muscles.
- Supportive shoes and shoe insert: shoe inserts (orthotics) can be particularly helpful for those who have flat feet [4]. It can help in relieving pain of shin splints. Orthotics support your arches and reduce stress on the muscles and bones in your lower legs.
- Physical therapy: Physical therapy [5] is an effective way to get you back on your feet. It will help strengthen and reduce your chance of recurring injury.
