Spondyloarthritis – An Overview

Spondyloarthritis Diagnosis

Early diagnosis is important to control symptoms and lower your risk of complications or impairment. Your doctor will consider your symptoms, medical history, and have a physical examination, before concluding that you have spondyloarthritis.

The following can confirm the condition:

  • X-rays of the pelvic sacroiliac joints
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • HLA-B27 gene test in the blood

Who’s at Risk of Spondyloarthritis?

Sometimes the cause of spondyloarthritis is unclear. You may be at greater risk for the condition if you:

  • possess the HLA-B27 gene
  • have a family member with spondyloarthritis
  • frequently get gut infections from bacteria
  • have another inflammatory disease like psoriasis or inflammatory bowel disease

According to research from the American College of Rheumatology, Sami, Siberian Eskimo, and Alaskan people are more likely to develop spondyloarthritis.
