Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD): Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Symptoms of Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

The extent of the pain you experience depends on how weight and pressure gets distributed throughout your body. How you love your body can either worsen or improve your pain. For pregnant women, the weight of the fetus or several fetuses can exert more pressure on the joint, making the pain more serious. Usually, the pain might increase as you draw closer to delivery. You may feel:

  • Mild discomfort
  • Sudden shooting pain coming from the from or back of the pelvis
  • Constant pain that radiates throughout your back, lower abdomen, groin, thigh, perineum (the space between your abi and vulva) and leg.

The way you move your body can also worsen your pain, for example:

  • Bending forward
  • Walking, you may notice clicking sound when you walk
  • Climbing or going down the stairs
  • Getting into or out of the car
  • Adjusting yourself in bed
  • Standing on one leg or raising a leg
  • Getting yourself out of bed or out of a chair

You can also experience some symptoms besides pain, such as:

  • Randomly feeling fatigue
  • Having difficulty peeing or pooping
  • Hearing a clicking or grinding sound from your pelvis.

The pain and discomfort can be disturbing such that it affects your mental health. It may contribute to symptoms linked to postpartum depression [2] after the birth of your baby. It is advisable to discuss with your provider about behavioral health support if you are experiencing symptoms related to depression.
