Osteoporosis [4] is a condition where the bones become weak and are more likely to break. If you have severe AS, there’s a chance it can lead to osteoporosis. The extra bone that grows and fuses the spine makes the spine brittle, with greater chance of breakage.

If you have AS, you should be screened for osteoporosis within 10 years of diagnosis. Your doctor will recommend several ways and approach to improve your bone health, they may include certain exercise, dietary changes and supplements.

Certain medication may also be prescribed to reduce further bone loss.
