Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis): Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Preventing Valley Fever

If you reside in a region where Coccidioides fungal spores are common, it’s very difficult to avoid breathing them in. Even if Valley fever cannot totally be avoided, there are some things you can do to lower your risk:

  • Avoid going in places where you’ll be covered in dust or filth. Use a N95 respirator mask to help filter out fungus spores from the air if you must be in these places.
  • During dust storms, keep your windows closed and remain indoors.
  • Avoid engaging in activities that could expose you to fungus spores, such as gardening, excavating, or other yard labor.
  • Use air filters inside.
  • Clean cuts and scrapes thoroughly with soap and water to avoid skin diseases.
