What Are The Symptoms of Emphysema?

Protracted and recurrent attacks of cough

Cough is a protective reflex that ensures the airways and throat are clear. While the act of coughing could often be inconveniencing or embarrassing, this reflex is very helpful. Coughing facilitates the healing process of any respiratory tract disease. It also protects the body from any form of microorganisms that could clog the airways.

There are two types of cough, acute and chronic cough. It is common to see acute cough in conditions such as cold, acute bronchitis, and flu. This cough starts suddenly and usually lasts for 2 to 3 weeks. It stops after this time.

Chronic cough is seen in conditions such as emphysema, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and so on. This cough exceeds a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

Excessive mucus production

Mucus is produced normally in the respiratory tract that spans from the nose to the lungs. The mucus produced traps allergens, dust, microorganisms, particles, etc that would have entered the lungs in its absence. But in emphysema, mucus production is excessive. This excess mucus produced causes discomfort due to an increased need to clear the throat by coughing or spitting. This symptom is best treated by treating emphysema.
