What Are The Symptoms of Emphysema?

Whistling sound from the nostrils known as wheezing

Whistling or wheezing often occurs when a part of the respiratory tract is blocked. This blockage narrows the airways thus restricting the movement of air. Hence when you breathe, a rough sound is produced from the nostrils.

Wheezing is commonly seen in lung diseases such as lung cancer, asthma, and of course emphysema. Based on the type of disease, wheezes have different characteristics. They occur at different phases of the respiratory cycle based on the extent of the obstruction of the airways. In emphysema where the alveoli are mostly affected, wheezes are produced when expiration and inspiration end. This is because that period represents the opening and closing of the collapsed alveoli.
